The grand London hotels have taken the ritual of afternoon tea and elevated it to the point of poetry. In a carefully polished tradition dating back to the middle of the 19th century, loose-leaf black tea from chests is ceremonially poured into finest bone china amid the lustre of cut-glass chandeliers, the genteel rattle of cup on saucer, and the delicate scent of roses. In the pursuit of perfection on the palate, tiers of precision-cut finger sandwiches and the daintiest of sweet treats are served alongside.

Black tea, the dried leaves of the evergreen tea plant, has been traditionally applied for its soothing and protective properties, owing to a richness in tannins and polyphenols. The queen of the English garden, the rose contains precious natural oils that help lock in the skin’s moisture and promote smooth skin. The scent of rose is also much prized in aromatherapy for its calming and uplifting effects.
